Brighton & Hove City Council’s Core Strategy (LDF)
TBH submitted an overall response from the Local Govt Liason Group. The Energy and Food Groups also submitted own responses.
The revised Core Strategy is timetabled to be sent to government in May 2009. We will receive a copy of the final document when it is published, as will all consultation responders.
Community & Voluntary Sector Forum & City Sustainability Partnership
The CVSF AGM will be on 10th September. The papers have been sent to TBH.
· JC to collect these papers.
· Encourage members of TBH to attend AGM to raise TBH profile.
There are three places for CVSF, and 5 candidates (including TBH rep Jacqui Cuff). The merits of all candidates were discussed, and a recommendation for our three votes made (based on the candidates background, profile, knowledge and ability to make themselves heard) to be taken for agreement by TBH Forum on 27/08/08.
We also decided that we would vote for candidates for the 2020 Community Partnership (LSP); Stronger Communities Partnership and Economic Partnership. [The forum on 27/08/08 decided we should not vote for the candidate on Economic Partnership]
· JC to explain this at 27/08/08 Forum.
· JC to attend AGM and vote.
Feedback of Thurstan Crockett’s talk to TBH (22/07/08)
A follow up, thank you email has been sent to Thurstan Crockett (awaiting reply).
One Planet Living workshops are happening 23rd–27th September (to inform BioRegional Quintain for the development of Brighton One Planet Living Plan; and BHCC for the Sustainability Strategy). It is important we attend, as this is our main chance to contribute to these plans.
There was concern over the lack of publicity, perhaps this will come out in September. TBH have not yet received and info about it (was spotted on the BHCC website).
· VWJ to check with BHCC Sustainability Team that TBH are on the contact list for workshops.
· VWJ to print out Agenda + publicise at Forum.
· JES plans to attend Weds, Fri & Sat workshops; Jacqui plans to attend Thurs workshops.
Forum & TBH generally..(some thoughts on where we need to improve)
-There was concern with the (lack of) strategic progression. Do we have a Transition movement, or is it just a collection of project groups?
-The (apparent lack of) structure/ set-up of TBH has its downsides.
-Are we ‘remaking the wheel’? Is TBH where our efforts are most usefully met, or are we detracting from other good causes?
-TBH could be strengthened through rebranding as an umbrella organisation of environmental / sustainability groups in Brighton & Hove.
-We already have a lot of information on climate change, peak oil etc. we now need to take some action.
-Action could be through existing organisations already doing this stuff (FoE, CRAGS, Bricycles etc.)
Vision of TBH
-We’re lacking vision, it needs further research.
-We should evaluate existing visions for the city (e.g. from BHCC’s Sustainability Team)
-The New Economics Foundation do this kind of work full-time, we don’t have the skills/capacity.
-A suggested first bit of work for the City Sustainability Partnership could be to look at the city’s vision, and where it’s failing.
-Felt there is no general understanding of where TBH wants to go, and therefore the most useful function is to take up any opportunities (e.g. a rep on the CSP, or at least attending as public).
· Idea – an A4 Sheet on what a sustainable city looks like for Transition Brighton & Hove. This will show the big picture, with general position statements from all interest groups. This will be useful for Jacqui if she gets elected to the City Sustainability Partnership, as something to base decisions on.
Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution consultation on adaption to climate change
Would take a lot of time to respond to fully.
The questions asked in the consultation might focus our attention – they would be useful to explore in TBH, as this is what the government is looking at.
· MW to raise/publicise at Forum
· TP to ask webmaster to paste it on TBH website.
· MW to look through and identify some appropriate questions.
